Since the mid-nineties I have lived with my husband and daughter in a house in Sovolusky in the Sudetenland. From the moment we moved there, I wanted to find out more about the history of the place. I first went to the archive in Ústí, and then later found a person who had grown up here and was deported to Germany with his entire family after the war. We stayed in contact for ten years and I was able to find out things you can’t find in the archive. I am trying to understand the place which is my home, come to terms with its past, and become part of it. I often wonder about the people who lived in our house, how they experienced similar situations like me, in the daily passage of time.

Úřední deska, veřejná deska, vývěsní tabule a další podobná pojmenování označují velmi specifické místo, jehož cílem je informovat, sdělit zprávu či oznámení, a to samozřejmě oficiálním jazykem. Pokouším se narušit stereotyp očekávaného příjmu informace a vkládám do tohoto prostoru fotografii zachycující osobní sdělení psané rukou konkrétního člověka. Krátká spojení slov v sobě skrývají něco velmi soukromého a snad i bolestného. Někdo, koho osobně neznáme, nám nechává vzkaz: Je to moje vina, Je mi to moc líto, Udělám to pro tebe. Konfrontace veřejné desky a intimní výpovědi zneklidňuje svojí určitou nečekaností a také přímostí. Obsah vět připomíná situace, které důvěrně známe, a vyvolává asociace spojené s naší individuální zkušeností.

Official bulletin boards and public announcement kiosks are special places intended to provide information, release reports and make announcements, naturally in official language. Here, I attempt to break down the stereotypical expectations of one reading such postings by placing photographs in these spaces which present personal messages, handwritten by some individual. The few words convey something very personal and perhaps even painful. Someone we do not know personally has left us a message: It’s my fault, I’m very sorry, I’ll do it for you. There is an unsettling clash here between the public bulletin board and the unexpected and direct messages. The sentences could be talking about the most intimate details of our own lives, our own experiences.

Zajímá mne průzkum a definice domácích systémů a schémat, princip jejich vytváření a hra s jejich určitou
absurditou. Zároveň mne fascinují různé domácí jevy a úkazy, které ve své nenápadnosti často procházejí našimi domovy nezpozorovány. Inspirují mne reálné momenty a situace, které s jemnou nadsázkou rekonstruuji, zveličuji, přeháním a dovádím k hranicím perfekcionismu, nebo naopak dokumentuji konkrétní okamžik poznamenaný dávkou jisté podivnosti či každodenního zázraku. V obou případech balancuji na hranici reálnosti a konstrukce.

I’m interested in exploring the systems and patterns of households, examining how they are created and defined, and playing with the absurdity of it all. I’m also fascinated by various household phenomena which are inconspicuous and often pass unobserved. I am inspired by real moments and situations which I reconstruct with subtle hyperbole, exaggerate and refine to the limits of perfectionism, or to the contrary document a specific moment marked by something strange or miraculous. In both cases, I find myself balanced between reality and invention.

In 1979, I found a small inconspicuous prayer book from the late nineteenth century in the attic of an old house purchased by my uncle. I was ten years old and Czechoslovakia was undergoing the process of “normalization”. At the time, this little book represented something magical and forbidden to me, and the names written in ink of the owners and their children (with dates of birth and death) led me to think and reflect upon the lives of these “unknown people”. I read the prayers for particular occasions and the advice for children, wives and husbands and I imagined “them” leafing through the book and reading the texts. Eventually, the book ended up relegated to a bookcase, where I only picked it up when moving or cleaning up. At times like these I might read a few pages and then put it back. Such was the case in 2008, nearly thirty years after my secret discovery, when I opened to the chapter Thoughts for a Wife. After all these years, the text took on a new dimension for me. The advice on how a wife should behave, what she should and shouldn’t do, what her relationship with her husband should be like, could certainly seem laughable and even offensive to some women. However, between the lines I find the tenderness and fragility of married life and am glad to learn.

Here I explore the mechanisms of manipulation and control which work in our mind as a subconscious process. To manipulate or be manipulated (by someone or something) and the desire and need to control and dominate is part of our thinking and behavior. I attempt to capture the very moment when freedom is lost, however slowly and unconsciously, and the boundaries of our tolerance shifted. When making decisions about the form of the photographic image, I take the visual message out of its original context by leaving its association to the original image, yet providing enough ambiguity for individual interpretation.

I live with my family in a small village above Ústí nad Labem and nearly every day for the past eighteen years I have gone down the hill into the valley. I have observed the city and all its changes, some major, some slow and some inconspicuous. I monitor the city as a whole and also its different neighborhoods. I am interested in the city as a part of the landscape, as an organism, the memory and structure of the city, the changes in the landscape, the process of human intervention in the landscape. With respect to our location in North Bohemia, I also focus on questions of co-existence between industrial agglomerations and residential neighborhoods, changes in the landscape due to industrial activities, the development of new suburban areas (satellite cities), and the integration of these new satellite cities with the historical center.

Soubor digitálních tisků Geist und Schönheit přímočaře čerpá z estetiky německých propagandistických časopisů třicátých let dvacátého století oslavujících dokonalost lidského těla a krásu ducha. Forma zůstává jakoby zachována, avšak primární ideologický smysl je jemně karikován. Spojení vizuálně posunutého obsahu původního fotografického obrazu s dobovým heslem nabízí široké možnosti interpretace. I přes lehkou nadsázku a vtip ovšem zůstává určité nadčasové znepokojení. Podstatnou roli zde hraje i fakt, že žiji v bývalé německé vesnici a snímky byly pořizovány v prostředí obývaném před
druhou světovou válkou Němci.

Geist und Schönheit directly draws from the esthetic of German propaganda magazines from the 1930s celebrating the perfection of the human body and the beauty of spirit. The form is essentially preserved, but the primary ideological sense is subtly caricatured. The combination of the visually-shifted content of the original photographic image with the period slogan offers a wide range of interpretation. Despite the slight exaggeration and humor, there remains a certain timeless disconcertedness. A major role here is also played by the fact that I live in a former German village and the photos were taken in an environment populated by Germans before the Second World War.

The concept of freedom is a very individual thing with vague boundaries. I attempt to imply this with images which are frozen moments in time, perhaps the beginning of a story in our minds. By merely hinting at things, there is unease, apprehension and foreboding. A dirty work-worn hand on satin undergarments, an abandoned horse, a blank screen glowing in the darkness, snow splattered with blood… I realize that the interpretational breadth in this case is truly broad.

The Landscapes cycle hyperbolically flirts with landscape photography. Landscapes are actually the photographic motif, but not the landscapes photographed directly, landscapes on a computer monitor, landscape photographed from on a website. As a “landscape photographer” I carry out the following process: 1. I photograph a real landscape with a digital camera, 2. I transfer the image to a computer and alter it, 3. I create a website where I place the image, 4. I program the page so that the particular window opens when the page loads, putting the photograph on the Internet, 5. I photograph this page directly from the monitor, converting the Internet form of the image back into photography. I’m interested in playing with various technologies in complicated and essentially meaningless ways, and applying these technologies in absurd manners which have little to do with the practical purposes for which they were originally created. This results in the humorous confusion of something which is technically perfect and precise. We are all quite familiar with internet “windows”, normally the source of information and indispensable components of websites, but now landscapes. Instead of a “window” opening, you get the moon, or a cloud, or a lake.

All Internet users have become accustomed to dialogue windows which report problems or errors, point out complications or warn against danger. I have attempted to shake up this stereotype with a subtle, poetic intervention by placing excerpts from medieval love poems into these dialogue windows. The result is the unexpected union of cold, precise technology and tender, lyrical text.

T-shirts reflects a period where children are fascinated by clothing printed with various inscriptions, while they oftentimes have no idea what the words mean. I have seen how my daughter and her classmates are capable of unintentionally juxtaposing their pendants with T-shirt inscriptions, unwittingly combining contemporary slogans with traditional symbols. A heart is found over the inscription “Devil”, the Virgin Mary is right next to “Kid’s Club Girl”.

Cyklus představuje celkem osm diptychů. Každý diptych je tvořen originálním satelitním snímkem staženým z internetu a dále jakousi „podomácku“ vyrobenou a záměrně naivní imitací tohoto originálu.

This cycle presents a total of eight diptychs. Each diptych consists of a satellite image downloaded from the Internet and a “homemade” and intentionally naďve imitation of the original. In the first diptych, the two shots are relatively similar. As the cycle progresses however, differences arise and we clearly begin to see a game being played with reality: the Statue of Liberty built from children’s building blocks, Alaska made of raw meat and yarn, Mt. Aetna made of faux fur and cotton etc. The macro and the micro worlds collide, an image taken from a satellite and a photograph taken at home in the kitchen present seemingly equally valuable information. In spite of the cheap humor and laughable way in which the “homemade” satellite images are constructed, a certain tension and uncertainty is introduced. The naďve game with powerful technology brings about some doubts about the truthfulness of our interpretation of information received from the media. What is reality and what is fiction? Where is the boundary of truth and also tolerance for its rational perception? Satellite uses subtle and humorous exaggeration to address our faith in the photographic medium and its ability to manipulate our concepts of reality.

Soubor digitálních tisků Hoax si pohrává s prostředím internetu a zároveň s každodenní lidskou realitou.

This collection of digital prints plays with the environment of the Internet as well as with everyday human reality. A hoax is a humorous or malicious deception, a false alarm which spreads misinformation and brings about nothing but confusion. Here, I have combined images with texts taken from actual hoaxes. This combination relativizes the content of the photographs. Subconsciously, new contexts are created leading to doubts and questions. The Hoax cycle of digital prints addresses the content credibility of widely circulated reports and also challenges our everyday certainties and convictions. Do we believe what we see? Do we believe what we read? Do we believe what we experience?

There are two themes in my photographic work which of course are not mutually exclusive, to the contrary they are very closely related. The first dimension is rather personal and intimate, it is a certain private response transformed into more general meanings and contexts. The second is when a particular experience becomes an opportunity for me to name and decipher universal laws. It is precisely these moments which collide in the collection Of Innocence.

In 1996 our family bought a former Sudeten farmhouse not far from Ústí nad Labem. Even though I had lived in Ústí nad Labem since 1987, the move to the village meant the beginning of discovery for me of the surrounding villages and all the out-of the way places along the border. At that time, I also often visited my parents in Chomutov, making the trip through the inhospitable landscape around the North Bohemian brown coal basin. On my travels I often saw the silhouettes of women – prostitutes standing on the edge of the road and waiting for a customer. I began to photograph the women as a silent observer, from a distance with a telephoto lens. It was not my desire to create some kind of critical document dealing with the problem of prostitution. I was interested in the women as beings, who have their own parents, children and partners, and who, because of the particular circumstances in their lives, do what they do.

I spent my childhood in the North Bohemian city of Chomutov. At that time, I didn’t understand why part of the Chomutov cemetery had abandoned graves with the remnants of German gravestones. It was only after talking with my grandmother that I learned about what had happened after the war in Chomutov, at least as far as my child’s mind allowed me to understand. Since then, I have visited many cemeteries and small rural graveyards in the North Bohemian region and often this has reminded me of my native city and the questions I had asked, which of course have since then been answered in many (often painful) ways. This collection of photographs shows the torsos of graves in Sudeten cemeteries. It is no longer clear who is buried here, sometimes a grave is so inconspicuous that we are hardly sure it is even there.

These are cutouts from old photographs, cutouts of legs and arms with certain gestures indicating particular situations. The photographs are school pictures taken from the family albums and some of them depict also my great-grandmother and grandmother. The viewer is presented with part of a situation which must be interpreted and gradually constructed based on a certain schematic. Another element present is the game between the photographer and the subject, certain hints of manipulation.

I always experience a very strange and unpleasant feeling full of dread when I see a child’s hand holding a toy weapon, some beautifully colored pistol aimed at something or someone. At that particular moment, it may seem like a game but what is the child experiencing?

Large-format photographs representing the view of a child being dressed by her mother. It is the view looking up towards the opening of dresses, a view which is repeated daily and accompanied by a very intimate and even ritual process between mother and child. The child submissively stretches her arms up and the mother patiently dresses. Moreover, the oversized photographic image is no longer just a window through a piece of clothing, but an imaginary window leading somewhere further, a symbol of direction or rebirth.

Černobílé fotografie jsou pokryty několika listy průsvitného pauzovacího papíru, jenž symbolicky představuje vrstvy času a postupného zapomínání či opětovného vybavování si zasutých momentů.

Objects and photographs are closely related to human memory, the foggy recollections of childhood, they are a record of what was and is no longer. Plaster dresses are the fragile shells of a body which has grown, become a memory of someone who is physically an entirely different person. Black and white photographs are covered by several layers of tracing paper, symbolically representing layers of time and the gradual forgetting or sudden recollection of bygone moments.

This photo installation is based on a close-up of my daughter’s scar when she was two years old. The scar of a specific person, moreover one who was close to me, became a kind of symbol of individual suffering which I reproduced and to a certain degree attempted to generalize in this manner. The installation respected sacred space, but was not primarily intended to reflect Christ’s suffering.

Several self-portraits appear very similar, although it is obvious that each photograph has been altered in some way to subtly change the original identity. These alterations are even fairly unprofessional and done in pencil, although they do attempt to look as realistic as possible. The photographs were taken in 1994 while the first version of the Adobe Photoshop program for Microsoft Windows came out in 1996.
